Now gearing up to release the 2021 EP, ‘Scatterbox’, Fronted by the first single ‘Brothers’ The Lost Gecko reflect on the songs that have come about during the longest period of lockdown in Ireland and beyond.
‘Brothers’ is a song about community and compassion for our fellow human beings in our time of most need.
Cork based modern folk trio The Lost Gecko have continuously developed their own sound since their 2016 EP ‘Unphotographable’ that has become unmistakeable to the listeners’ ear.
‘Haunting’ is the word that is repeated most when talking about The Lost Gecko.
And this upcoming batch of songs is no different as they develop their sound further with bass cello drones, different low guitar tunings that definitely nods towards John Martyn and Ben howard and low fi unintrusive beats that would lead the listener to thinking there was no beat at all.
Singer/Songwriter Malcolm Urquhart and Cellist and Partner Elaine McCarthy have been recording at home near Macroom , Co.Cork since the lockdown and the songs are being mixed and produced by long term friends John Burke at Claycastle Studios, Youghal County Cork where The Lost Gecko Recorded ‘Unphotographable’ (2016) and Nils Elders at Blairwood Studios in Aberdeen, Scotland where Malcolm recorded his first 3 Eps –
‘Electrify the seas’ - thelostgecko1.bandcamp.com/album/electrify-the-seas (2006),
‘Butterfly Bomb’ - thelostgecko1.bandcamp.com/album/butterfly-bomb (2007)
‘Clocks, Ghosts and Heartbeats’ - thelostgecko1.bandcamp.com/album/clocks-ghosts-heartbeats (2009).
Malcolm reflects “Brothers’ is a song that we’ve been playing live for about four years now.
We had recorded it before but knew that we wanted to give it some more attention because it had changed so much after playing it live so many times.”
In 1847 , Ireland was in the grip of the potato famine and millions were starving and millions were leaving (if they were able).
Children were eating grass to survive.
The Choctaw Native Americans learned of the plight of the Irish and set about raising as much money as they could to send to them. They raised $170, equivalent to about $5,000 in todays money.
As a result of their generosity, there is a monument named ‘Kindred Spirits’ that stands in Ballick Park, Midleton, Co.Cork to commemorate this .
And today, the Irish are helping the same tribe as Covid 19 rampages across the globe.
The Haunting, Emotive ‘Brothers’ by The Lost Gecko is out ‘Date’
Brothers, stolen mothers
Fathers, bloody tethers
That fold us , into feathers
From birds that, never weather
To escape stormy weather
And exploited , by the wealthy
And we're chosen, by the stealthy
So the wheelhouse, remains empty
This hard stern, makes us fast learn
And this slow burn, makes us u-turn
And we return, for the summer
To build up, our new feathers
To stitch up, golden leathers
From Bison, chasing weather
To the lowlands, kill our daughters
And the souls that
Drowned in water
(CHANT)
Dont leave us , in this hollow
Our lives are, grown from sorrow
And our Brothers, we will follow
Yes our Brothers, we will follow
These kids are, not for borrow
So dont leave us
In this hollow
And our Brothers we will follow
What their steps now
As we all grow...
